Beat the cold:
Running and biking in winter

October 9, 2017

Short days, bone-chilling cold, fog in the air. Perfect equipment is essential for the harsh conditions in the dark season. It should not be too hot or too cold. Good insulation is essential in autumn and winter, but for strenuous activities breathable material is still very high on the list of requirements.

Trailrunner and ultramarathon runner Sondre Amdahl from the GORE® athletic team trains in tough conditions: ‘As a Norwegian, I know how I have to handle cold temperatures. The most important part is to be protected against rapid cooling.’

The ESSENTIAL GORE® WINDSTOPPER® products with PrimaLoft insulation offer the best insulation and protection against wind and moisture. The running vest and overpants keep the critical areas close to the body warm without a risk of overheating. The GORE® WINDSTOPPER® material is breathable, water-repellent and 100% windproof, which is essential for the winter climate, because the windchill factor causes the body to expend an extreme amount of energy. The high breathability despite a warm insulating layer creates a pleasant microclimate. The result: increased athletic performance at lower strain.

Sondre Amdahl advises: ‘Wind and wetness are the biggest challenges in cold weather. In addition to functional clothing, I always fare very well with the simple but effective strategy: Running. Start at a fast pace with the first step so that the body gains momentum quickly. I also try to not make any stops. But if I do, I try make it as briefly as possible.’

Biking is also not limited to the summer months only. ‘As long as the snow is not piling up high on the trails, I drive a lap almost every day – it’s the only way to remain in shape to start in full force in the spring again,’ explains the French GORE® athlete Rémi Laffont.

The 26-year-old athlete is still young, but is experienced in biking and knows the requirements for the right equipment like no other: ‘My personal recommendation is the new POWER TRAIL GORE® WINDSTOPPER® insulated jacket made of a mix of PrimaLoft and Thermo-Stretch. It keeps you warm without constraint. Even in the cold, optimum freedom of movement is necessary. If the weather changes or turns bitter-cold, the windproof and water-repellent POWER TRAIL GORE® WINDSTOPPER® insulated shorts work perfectly. Thanks to an almost continuous zip on the side, it can be quickly put on, even without taking off your shoes.’
