It’s pouring down and the wind whistles in your ears. It is cold as ice but your legs are on fire. Time to quit? Keep going – only 300 metres to the finish line. 300 metres that pack a punch. Well: Suck it up and give it all you got. Because every race is a challenge. Even if it is only the last 300 metres during training.
Not only giving it your best, but exceeding personal limits and redefining achievements: if you want to reach beyond your limits, you must not only be well prepared and equipped, but also demonstrate mental strength. Even GORE® athletes continuously surpass their own best performances and set ambitious goals for themselves, which means they must be able to rely entirely on their equipment.
Three GORE® athletes will be included in this year’s starting list at the legendary Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) from 28 August to 3 September. In addition to Yoann Stuck from France and the South Tyrolean Daniel Jung, who will run the TDS race as part of the UTMB, Lisa Mehl from Germany will be there for the first time: ‘Being at the start with the absolutely best top runners is a special honour.’ The elite of trail running, to which the young GORE athlete now also belongs, will gather at the UTMB. For her, this means: exploring and redefining her own limits.
‘Mental strength is at least as important as the right clothing in this race’, says the exceptional talent. For her first UTMB, she is therefore reflecting on her inner self and focusing on her own abilities: ‘Believing in the power of the body is the greatest self-motivation.’ In terms of gear, Lisa does not compromise: ‘I rely on the MYTHOS LADY GORE® WINDSTOPPER® light vest and the matching MYTHOS LADY GORE® WINDSTOPPER® tights. This way, wind and weather cannot affect me and I can focus on the most important thing: Giving it 110% and overcoming performance limits.’
The GORE® athletes Sondre Amdahl from Norway and Zac Marion from the USA are also experts in going beyond their own limits. This year, for the first time, they will face the challenge of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run as a team. The experienced Sondre will use his mental and physical strength to go above and beyond and push his young team colleague Zac Marion. Zac will make his debut on European soil at the Transalpine Run and will treat the course with the utmost respect: ‘Compared my home in Utah, it is almost ice cold in the Alps and the differences in altitude are immense. That is why, during preparation for the race, I paid close attention to the climatic conditions and made sure to choose the right gear. With the FUSION GORE® WINDSTOPPER® shirt, I am perfectly protected: when it starts to rain, I just put the RESCUE RUNNING GORE-TEX® jacket over it. Lightweight and compact, it can also be quickly stowed away again, making it perfect for changing conditions.’
