Golden leaves and golden trails

Muddy root-knotted trails, slippery stony fields and a cool wind – all of a sudden, the warm autumn sunshine bursts through the branches and dries the earth. For GORE BIKE WEAR® Athlete Viviane Favery Costa mountain biking in the bright autumn is really enjoyable – if you are well equipped, at least. Here she reveals her favourite routes for this changeable but beautiful season and her favourite pieces of the new POWER TRAIL LADY line autumn/winter collection she helped us to develop.

Technically challenging routes are as much part of everyday sporting life of Brazilian marathon champion Viviane Favery Costa as highly changeable weather conditions. The 30-year-old pro mountain biker from the team ‘Rose Vaujany fueled by ultraSPORTS’ is a passionate biker and last autumn won the Brasil Ride. ‘Autumn is quite simply the most beautiful time of year for biking – but you always have to contend with changeable weather conditions, of course. Perfectly fitting, functional clothing made from high-tech materials is therefore essential,’ explains Costa, ‘because if the body cools down, you can no longer achieve a top performance.’

Female Power for an autumn bikeride – the new POWER TRAIL LADY line

She helped to develop the current POWER TRAIL LADY line from GORE BIKE WEAR®: ‘The collection makes it easier for mountain bikers in all sorts of ways. All the materials nestle softly against the body; clever details offer style, comfort and functionality. At the same time, the materials are very hard-wearing, hold their own in all weather conditions and offer excellent moisture management. They help me to concentrate fully on the trail – but are also stylish if I want to go on a bike trip with my friends on a warm autumn day,’ adds the São Paulo–born pro mountain biker. And she knows what she’s talking about. She is on the move all year round – always on the lookout for her next challenge and the next trail.

Vivianes favourite routes for a golden season: Cycling the Camino de Santiago –  a Mountainbikeride that means pure meditation

‘Four years ago, I cycled with my mountain bike from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The tour was completely different to the races I compete in otherwise. There was no competition, no training – just six days of self-discovery. I followed the 850 km long and over 1,000-year-old pilgrimage route surrounded by pilgrims from around the world. This experience changed my life – cycling became a form of meditation. I am astounded by what you can learn about life and about yourself while pedalling at a steady rhythm. When I arrived in Santiago de Compostela, I felt grounded, content with what I have, thankful for my life and unbelievably grateful for what I have achieved.’

Steep, stony Trails in Switzerland – perfect for expanding one’s skills

‘Along with my teammate Nathie, I rode along her home trails in Solothurn, Switzerland – and had a truly amazing time there. In order to overcome the often steep, stony and root-strewn trails, you need good technique, which is a great challenge. I was able to jump the bike there and expand my skills. It’s really great to have a friend with whom you can conquer your limits – and have great fun at the same time.’

Lake Como offers great ascents and espresso breaks with a view

‘The area around Lake Como is just made for biking – with great trails and ascents. But, more than anything, I love the flair – no matter where I choose to have my espresso break, the view is incredible. I am always made to feel welcome there, am spoiled with excellent food and am surrounded by friendly people. When I arrive at Lake Como after a strenuous session of interval training and ride through the beautiful surroundings, I feel like I’m on holiday.’

And these are Viviane’s favourite pieces of the new POWER TRAIL LADY line:

POWER TRAIL LADY GWS Jacket_1300_1

For Costa, the new POWER TRAIL LADY GT AS jacket is indispensable for her tours because it adapts like a chameleon to changeable weather conditions – be it warm autumn sunshine, drizzle, frost or icy winds. Thanks to the innovative GORE-TEX® Active Technology, the jacket, available in black and pink, is extremely breathable and highly wind- and water-resistant. It even keeps your body dry in persistent torrential rain. The two-way zip fastening is securely integrated into the jacket, and the hood, which can be fixed to the back with a magnet, offers a wide field of vision. It also doesn’t puff out with the airstream, and the rain brim on the visor is designed so that the water runs right off. Reflective elements don’t just function as real visual highlights; they also increase safety when lighting is poor.
The POWER TRAIL LADY GWS jacket is equally well thought out for volatile weather conditions and, in black or bright pink, is more than just a visual eye-catcher. Equipped with PrimaLoft® insulation and the WINDSTOPPER® membrane, wind, cold and moisture stand no chance against the figure-hugging softshell jacket – which remains completely breathable. The high-folding collar with magnetic closure reliably protects against the airstream and cold blasts – an indispensable comfort item. Broad elasticated cuffs on the sleeves ensure that they are easily pushed up but do not slip out of place.
